The Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority is privileged to be involved in APEC 2018 and the APEC Women in Tourism Dialogue on is our first planned major work program for this week.
Let me on behalf of the Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture Hon. Emil Tammur and the Government of Papua New Guinea welcome you all to this important dialogue.
The APEC Women in Tourism Dialogue emphasizes on “Women as Prime Movers of Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism in the Digital Age” and is organized by the Papua New Guinea.Tourism Promotion Authority with support from the PNG 2018 APEC Coordinating Authority.
This Self Funded Initiative is aligned to the APEC 2018 Theme, specifically in Promoting Sustainable and Inclusive Growth, focusing on expanding opportunities for women.
PNG as APEC 2018 hosts, we aim to take a sectoral approach in addressing issues relating to the economic empowerment for women.
This dialogue will hopefully stimulate discussions on enhancing women’s economic participation and productivity in Tourism in the areas of sustainability, inclusivity and the digital age.
Additionally, it will chart a way forward for APEC to collaborate in addressing gender gaps and empower women to participate more actively in the tourism industry. Such collaboration may be within APEC such as with the Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy (PPWE) and other relevant fora, or externally, with the UNWTO.
Papua New Guinea will present the Dialogue Report of this Women In Tourism Dialogue at the TWG52.which will follow this workshop in what will be a hectic Tourism Week for us concluding with the 10th APEC Tourism Ministers Meeting.
As you may already be aware, this project also seeks to address charting a way forward for APEC to collaborate in addressing gender gaps and empower women to participate more actively in the tourism industry.
It is our belief that this project will have sustained benefits for more than one economy as it bring together APEC economies private sector, public sector, non-governmental organizations, academia and civil society to engage in focused discussions on womens’ economic empowerment and gender inclusion in the tourism sector.
Ladies and gentlemen, before I conclude, I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for taking time off from your busy schedules to be part of this dialogue.
I am sure you will contribute meaningfully to today’s discussions and I want to wish you all a fruitful and enjoyable day.
