As the world commemorates World Tourism Day on 27 September 2017, the South Pacific Tourism Organisation has taken a step back to look forward with the launching of its BE THE CHANGE CHALLENGE. Whilst the globe is rushing to do something, SPTO staff have utilized this platform to pause, reflect and prepare to embark on a 2 months journey to learn, exchange and share information on the theme Sustainable Tourism – a Tool for Development to Benefit the Pacific.
The Management and staff have taken it upon themselves that it is only right to start the change from within. Driven by staff through its Social and Green Committees, SPTO staff will be committing to learning about sustainable tourism, its importance for the development of our Pacific island countries, its contribution to sustaining our peoples’ livelihoods and most importantly in the sustainable use and management of ocean and land resources.
Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Cocker congratulated staff on this initiative highlighting the importance of being responsible caretakers of the gifts from our forefathers. The challenge also aims to increase awareness amongst staff, their networks and wider stakeholders of the benefits that tourism as an economic sector can bring to the Pacific. It will culminate with an Awards Night in December 2017.
