Developing an online presence and increasing its profile with local and international trade are two of the priorities for Savo Sunset Lodge.

The budget accommodation and day tour provider is an hour away from Honiara by boat (as in banana boat) and is definitely for the adventurous at heart, but offers activities and an environment of its own. Savo Island itself is formed by two volcanoes and one of the popular trips is a guided walk to where boiling water bubbles out of the earth and flows down the mountain as a warm river. Owners, Bernard Kemakeza and Nester Bele, say the lodge has just launched a facebook page and is looking at more digital activity.

At the same time the lodge (priced S$150 per person – about NZ$35 – a night) is upgrading its facilities. Kemakeza says he has a relationship with local travel agents and is looking at ways to spread that to niche trade in other countries. Sunset Lodge operates walks with names like Big Volcano and Warm Waterfall (which sum the destinations up) plus a dolphin watch trip to the local dolphin sanctuary and village tours.

The latter is highly recommended – clients can see dances only performed on this island and they will be joined by the local children for the performance. It is an uplifting experience.
