Push to improve Cook Islands export and investment strategy

New Zealand High Commissioner in the Cook Islands Tessa Temata says Pacific Trade Invest (PTI) New Zealand should be a part of the discussion on how to improve the export and investment strategy of the Cook Islands.

This statement has come after a recent visit by PTI senior staff during their trip to the Cook Islands to facilitate the Path to Market and Investment Profiling Workshop.

Trade Development Manager for PTI Ian Furlong has stressed the significance of the workshop in the Cook Islands to the High Commissioner.

“Participants were delighted to attend the workshop primarily because they learned the ABCs of export goods, which focused on relevant topics such as understanding your customer, getting ready for export market – regulations and requirements, export marketing, and understanding product costing, pricing and profitability,” Ian says.

Ian has also voiced the sentiments of the participants, that the Chamber of Commerce needs to include the small businesses and participate in the activities which promote their goods and services.

Participants believe the Cook Islands Government needs to draft an Export Strategy for the Small Business Enterprises, as there are no clear-cut export strategies currently to help small exporters compete in the international market.

Meanwhile, PTI Acting Trade and Investment Commissioner Manuel Valdez has briefed the High Commissioner about topics included in the investment profiling section.

“These include global investment climate, ease of doing business, foreign investment trend, opportunities for investment, how to make investment decision, how to prepare an investment profile and business plan,” Manuel says.

Potential investors from China and Asian business opportunities was also a focus topic of discussion.

Currently, PTI is closely coordinating with the Business Trade and Investment Board (BTIB) to promote investment projects in the Cook Islands via PTI’s Pacific Hub, an online marketing platform to promote business opportunities and attract potential investors.
