Nauru’s Aiwo Boat Harbor Gets Asian Development Bank Funds

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to provide a $21.3 million grant to help upgrade the Aiwo boat harbor on the Central Pacific island of Nauru

This will make Aiwo the country’s first fully functioning international port.

Funding from ADB will help cover the $79.6m project, which will enhance port operations in Nauru through structural improvements and strengthened capacity of the Port Authority of Nauru.

Besides funding from ADB, funding will also be provided by Green Climate Fund ($26.9m), the Australia government ($14.1m), and the Nauru government ($17.3m).

“The people of Nauru as well as local businesses will benefit greatly from this upgrade. Nauru has been relying on the small boat harbor at Aiwo for 110 years and the time has come to upgrade its port infrastructure and operations through the Port Development Project, thanks to the joint efforts of ADB and the government of Australia, as well as the Green Climate Fund for their funding contributions,” said Anton Jimwereiy, CEO of the Port Authority of Nauru.
