The Government is now working on the transition from paper-based passport to e-passport with added security features.
Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the e-passport will make it difficult for people to enter the country illegally, making Fiji more secure.
Sayed-Khaiyum adds Fijians travelling overseas will also be able to use the e-passport gates to speed through the airport immigration queues.
“We are not only making Fiji safer but also setting up Fiji for wider visa-free status access around the world. We will progressively issue the new e-passport throughout the next financial year.”
The Minister also revealed the government will implement a number of reforms on immigration citizenship laws.
“These include the introduction of an expedite procedure for processing work permit applications. We will also revise our laws to enable foreign spouses of Fijian citizen to be able to able to not only enter and reside in Fiji but also to be able to work in Fiji”
Stringent measures will also be introduced in relation to citizenship applications including requirements that an applicant must obtain a permanent residency visa in Fiji first, before being eligible to apply for Fijian citizenship.
